- About Smokvica
Smokvica is a small municipality situated in a karst valley, in the centre of Korčula. Smokvica, whose landscape is characterized by vineyards, olive groves, cultivated fields, stone houses and Mediterranean architecture with a pleasant climate, has been inhabited since ancient times. This is evidenced by various archaeological remains found at the sites of ancient Greek villas. According to the statute of Korčula dating from the 13th century, Smokvica was an important settlement. The old centre of the village was built on a hill near the church of St. Michael. In Smokvica there is a large Neo-Romanesque church of The Purification of Our Lady with the bell tower, Vela and Mala Pijaca (Great and small market) and a Baroque loggia from 1700. Smokvica is around 4 kilometres away from the sea. Smokvica and its surroundings are known for the production of Posip, one of the best white wines from the Croatian coast.
