The Archaeological Museum has been open to the public since 1846. In 1945, it moved to its current location at the 19th-century Vranyczany-Hafner mansion. The museum consists of five main sections: Prehistory, Egypt, Antiquity, Middle Ages, Coins and Medals. It also features a library. While the prehistoric collection contains objects ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Late Iron Age, the section “Antiquity” contains an important collection of Greek and Roman monuments significant for this area. The section “Egypt” is specific because features Liber Linteus, 3rd century BCE mummy and bandages with the longest Etruscan inscription in existence. It is the only collection of its kind in Southeast Europe. In the library you can find professional archaeological literature. The permanent display shows the prehistoric collection that classified in time periods.
