- Ban Jelačić Square
Ban Jelačić Square
The Karlovac ‘Star’ was named so because the streets are arranged at right angles, so when seen from above they form a star shape. In the middle of the ‘Star’ is the the main square, and at the square is a statue of the Virgin Mary, which was built in the late 17th century. At the heart of the ‘Star’ is also a well dating back to the 19th century, which is decorated with numerous allegorical images. In addition, on the square are six poles, the Orthodox Church and barracks built in the 17th century, which were used for repairs and the storage of weapons. Karlovac is a city with a long and turbulent history, as evidenced by the many buildings and testimonies from that period.
