Cathedral of Hvar
Cathedral of Hvar (Hvar)
At the St. Stephen’s Square on the east side together with the Bishop’s palace, is the Cathedral of Hvar. The cathedral is the center of the parish. It is dedicated to the pope and martyr St. Stephen, who is the patron saint of the city. The cathedral was built during the 16th and 17th century, and Antun Bartučević is responsible for its construction. Because of the damage to the cathedral because of Turkish attacks in the 16th century, the church was reconstructed and got its current appearance at the turn of the 18th century. There are elements of Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance, Romanesque and Mannerism in its architecture. The cathedral has three naves and a bell tower on the north side. The famous Croatian author Hanibal Lucić is also a part of the history of the church.
