Cathedral of St. Mary
In the Jesuit complex, built in the 17th century, a special place is taken by the church dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The construction of the church took place from 1642 to 1656. The church got its final appearance in the 18th century. After the Jesuits, the church was taken over by the Paulines, Čazma Capitol, while in 1997 it became the cathedral of the newly established Diocese of Varaždin. The cathedral is the central place of the Varaždin Baroque Evenings. In the central niche of the façade, there is a statue of Mary from the 17th century, and under the niche is the Drašković family coat of arms. The interior is adorned by the main altar, which is also the biggest altar in the city of Varaždin. Along with the Cathedral, there is a monastery which changed it purpose after the ban of work of the Jesuits, and then the Paulines. On the premises of the former Jesuit school, built in 1651, the Bishop’s Chancery is located.
