Chapel of Our Lady of the Snow
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snow has been on Ban Jelačić Square since the end of the 19th century. Its name derives from a Roman legend, according to which it was once snowing in Rome in early August. Our Lady appeared to Pope Liberius by telling him to build a church on a Roman hill marked by snow. The basilica was named Liberian after the Pope. In memory of Our Lady, the people of Osijek often pray here in gratitude to Her, and the chapel is often referred to as the quiet sanctuary of the city.
