The Church of St Ambrose

The Church of St Ambrose is a beautiful single-nave church located near the Upper City Gate. Built in the 13th century, it has Romanesque-Gothic characteristics. It is located at the site of the former Benedictine Monastery of St Ambrose, which was built in 941. In the 15th century the Church of St Ambrose was renovated and the church area widened. It got its present-day look when it was renovated in 1992. The front side of the Church has characteristics of Romanesque architecture with a narrow Romanesque window and a single entrance portal, above which there is an opening in the form of a cross. Today the church has a rectangular apse, and the remains in its foundation bear witness that the church had a semi-circular apse. The church is used for celebrating the Mass and, because of its acoustics, also for occasional concerts.
