Church of St. Elia
Church of St. Elia
This Orthodox church is situated on a former Roman capitol. It was built in the late 16th century for Greek sailors and traders on the site where there used to be a same called medieval church. Some late Baroque style elements were added in the 18th century when the church was handed to the serbian community for usage. The church houses a valuable collection of religious icons from the period between the 16th and 18th century. Inside of the church is decorated with a lovely marble iconostasis that was painted by Michael Speranza, a painter from the island of Corfu who used to work in this region in late 18th and early 19th century.
