Church&remains of st. John

Although they played a major role in the city’s defense system in the past, today Dubrovnik City Walls serve as a fortification monument in Europe. Even though the construction had begun in the 8th century, it was not finished until the 15th and 16th century when it really reached a boom. It is an interesting fact that the earthquake in 1667 did not really damage the Walls. The Walls have a shape of an irregular polygon. Needless to say, they surround Dubrovnik. The walls go up to 25 meters in height, while reaching up to 1940 meters in length. The thicknesses of the Walls differs depending on the part of it. The continental part of the Dubrovnik City Walls is four to six meters thick. On the other hand, the marine part of the Walls is only up to three meters thick. Minčeta Tower is situated at the north-western (continental) part of Dubrovnik, while the St. John Fortress is situated at the south-eastern part. The forts Revelin and Lovrijenac were also a part of the defense system. There are three gateways that allow access to the City Walls (Pile’s Gate, Gate of Buža and Gate of Ploče). Furthermore, there are also fourteen rectangular towers, two round towers, two angular fortresses and four bastions that make up the main wall.
