Church of St. Nicholas
Parish church of St. Nicholas
The Baroque parish church dedicated to the patron saint of Varaždin, St. Nicholas, was built in 1761 on the foundations of an old Romanesque-Gothic church. The church is characterized by the Gothic tower what was not common in the northern parts of continental Croatia. It contains the coat of arms of the city of Varaždin of 1464. Around the church, there is an avenue which represented the cemetery until the end of the 18th century. In the niche of the tower, there is a statue of St. Florian. Below the entire area of the today’s church is a large crypt. The bell tower contains an embedded sculpture of a bear.
