Church of St. Simon
Church of St. Simon
This church was originally built in 5th century as a three nave basilica, with a semicircular and prominent shrine on the eastern side of the church. It was rebuilt several times throughout the history. The main altar is decorated with a gilded silver chest of St. Šime from 1380. Its estimated value is huge because beside being the masterpiece of medieval Zadar goldsmiths, it also keeps the mummified body of a saint. The church also keeps other valuable offerings from different historical periods, the most valuable one being the crown of Queen Elizabeth, wife of Louis the Great of Anjou. It was her who ordered the chest to be made at the Milan goldsmith Francis. The chest was officially declared to be a cultural monument of highest category. Along with its artistic value it is also of great significance to Croatian history, since its reliefs show important historical events and everyday life details of Zadar inhabitants.
