- Church St. Anthony
The church of Saint Anthony
Construction of Saint Anthony’s church began in 1767 according to Venetian architect Bereng’s design, and was completed in 1774. Despite the classicistic outside appearance, the interior is built in a late Baroque style. What makes the church special is its inner construction and location which gives it a special atmosphere and acoustics of a concert hall. The organ was made by the famous Venetian master Gaetano Callido in 1782, the stuccos with the pictures of musical instruments were made by swiss master Clemente Somazzi, and the specially made main altar with the picture of The dinner in Emaus is the work of Gaspar Albertini. The church is a monument to the glory of the sailors of Veli Lošinj, who have been donating valuable inventory to the church for generations.
