Church St. Juština
The Church of St. Juština
The most recognizable symbol of Pakoštane is the church of St. Juština, whom the locals call by the nickname St. Juštinica (Little St. Justine). It is located on the eponymous island and there are many stories and speculations about the church’s emergence. According to historical data, the church was built or rebuilt after the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. According to a legend, a soldier from Pakoštane went into that battle. He vowed to have the church built if he returned to the island, and he kept his promise. The victory in the Battle of Lepanto on October 7th, 1571 gave hope of permanent relief from Turkish presence in Pakoštane. A naval race is often held on the day of the feast of St. Justine, October 7th, in Pakoštane.
