City Bridge over the city port connects the historical center on the Peninsula with the newer city neighborhoods. The first bridge was open in 1928 and it had a roadway with sidewalks for pedestrians on each side. This bridge was destroyed in a World War II bombing and was replaced by a pontoon bridge in 1949. This bridge made it impossible to walk over it during strong winds. Today’s bridge was opened in 1962 with a Big folk festival, it is 152 meters long, 6 meters wide and the busiest pedestrian crossing in the city. Since the bridge cannot be opened in the middle, eastern part of the port remains inaccessible to larger ships. Although regarded as ugly, low lighting actually makes this bridge look rather attractive in the evening.
