City guards and museum
The City Guardsbulding was built in 1562, and the bell tower was additionally built in the 18th century. The tower has a town clock on it and it has been going constantly ever since 1803. The bigger bell that ticks full hour was brought from the Captain’s Tower (Bovo dí Antona) and the smaller one that ticks quarters of an hour from the neighboring church of St. Lawrence. The first mention of a city clock dates to 1555, and it was located on the Church of Forty Martyrs or St. Barbara’s church bell tower. The National Museum was founded in 1945 and it consisted of Ethnographic and Natural History Department. The Ethnographic collection consisted of more than two hundred different items that were exposed at the City Guards building. It is now mainly used as an exhibition gallery.
