Cathedral of St Peter and Paul
The first parish church in the Upper Town was built in the first half of the 18th century, but since it was located in the city centre, its appearance demanded further upgrading and renewal. The cultural activity of Josip Juraj Strossmayer marked the co-cathedral. The construction of a church began in 1894 on the initiative of Bishop Strossmayer. It was designed by two architects – Franz Langenberg and Richard Jordan. The interior is a treasure trove of neo-Gothic ornamentation, and the entire facade is covered with red brick. The church’s bell tower is 90 meters high, which makes it the tallest building in Croatia outside of Zagreb. The church’s walls and ceilings are covered with frescoes. The parish church of St. Peter and Paul became a co-cathedral in 2008.
