Lepoglava is situated along the Bednja River, underneath Ivanščica, and was first mentioned in 1399. This place is very important in regard to the Croatian culture, art, history, religion and science. In 1400, the monastery of St. Paul by Herman of Celje was founded. Pauline monks are responsible for the establishment of the first public grammar school and the Faculty of Philosophy, and the place was given the status of Croatian universities in 1674. Lepoglava is known for its splendid architecture of churches and monasteries with decorated walls. The Lepoglava lace is also very interesting. Nearby, there is a monument of nature Gaveznica-Kameni Vrh, which is a famous site of semi-precious stones.
