Omiš is located at the mouth of the Cetina River. It has been permanently inhabited since ancient times, and the origins of the present-day Omiš are to be found at the foot of Omiška Dinara. Over the centuries the locals started building houses closer to the sea. In the Middle Ages, Omiš was an important pirate centre. Throughout the entire 12th and 13th century, the pirates of Omiš forced all Split, Kotor, Dubrovnik and Venice, and even papal galleons sailing by this small town to pay tribute for free passage. If they refused, they risked engaging in a battle against the pirates of Omiš. Fortresses Mirabela (Peovica) was used as a lookout over the Channel of Brač, which served for monitoring navigation in the Brač channel. Present-day Omiš is an interesting tourist destination where tourists can have fun rafting, hiking and walking in the nature. It is famous for several cultural and entertainment events such as the Dalmatian Harmony Singing Festival.
