Ploče is located halfway between Dubrovnik and Split, a few kilometres west of the mouth of the Neretva River. It is located on the Adriatic coast in Dalmatia just north of the Neretva Delta and as such is the natural seaside endpoint of most north-south routes through the central Dinaric Alps. Ploče is a small town and a notable seaport which was first mentioned in written documents in 1387. Ploče has a population of 6,500 inhabitants, and together with the surrounding area about 11 000 inhabitants. The mouth of the Neretva River is known for its amateur sports race of original ships from Metković to Ploče. Near Ploče is the natural tourist attraction of seven freshwater lakes, called Baćina Lakes.
