Valpovo and the surrounding villages are mentioned in historical records from the 14th century. Valpovo’s estate was ruled by the Turks, then the Vienna Court Chamber and numerous barons and counts until 1942. After World War II, Valpovo became a municipal, administrative, judicial and economic centre. Among historical – cultural monuments, one is particularly notable – the Prandau Normann castle with a medieval cylindrical tower and the church of the Holy Trinity. The park architecture boasts the Prandau Park that is the original type of English landscape park with a number of plant species and rare ornamental plants. The significant monuments in Valpovo are the parish church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the 18th century and the chapel of St. Roch from the late 18th century. In addition to various valuable cultural monuments, Valpovo is also the proud hometown of the great Croatian writer Matija Petar Katančić.
