Cellars of the Diocletian’s Palace

Unlike the upper parts of the palace, from which only fragments have been preserved, the cellars of the Palace are very well preserved. Because of them, it was possible to reconstruct the upper parts whose layout was nearly the same. In the Roman period they served as a storage area, and in the Middle Ages they were partly used for housing. The cellars were used as waste pits and channels for housing and other facilities which were built over time within the former palace. Their cleaning began in the mid-19th century. In 1995, its eastern part was opened to the public. Today, the cellars are one of the tourist attractions of Split and it is where various fairs, exhibitions and other social, cultural and entertainment events are organized.
