Dominican Monastery and Museum
The Dominican Monastery is located inside the city walls and it played an important role in the city’s defence. This church is of simple Gothic, Baroque, Renaissance and Romanesque architectural design. The construction of the monastery began in 1228 with the support of the Dubrovnik authorities. In the 15th century a sacristy, a capitular hall and porches were built by the local builders as Radmanović, Utišenović, Grubačević and others. The richly decorated courtyard is increasingly attracting both domestic and foreign tourists because it can easily be turned into a beautiful natural stage. The special treasure of this monastery is its library with over 200 incunabulas and numerous illuminated manuscripts, even the best paintings of the Dubrovnik Art School have found their proper place here. In the church of St. Dominic you can see a large crucifix, which is the work of Paolo Veneziano and dates from the 14th century.
