The Euphrasian Basilica

The Euphrasian Basilica, built in the 6th century, was named after the Bishop Euphrasius, and is considered to be the most beautiful preserved monument of the Byzantine art, and is included on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. It was built on the foundations of a three-nave basilica, while today the Basilica is supported by rows of marble columns with beautiful capitals. It consists of several parts, some which are the Parish Church, St. Maurus’ Oratory, baptistery and the bell tower, the sacristy and so on. In the Basilica, one can come across valuable works of art and monuments of early Christian, medieval and early Byzantine times. Its beautiful facade and the interior are adorned with mosaics, the oldest of which date back to the 3rd century. Two main displays of glittering mosaics depict the Annunciation and the Visitation. The Basilica is open for visits every single day, and you can also visit the bell tower from which you can see the beautiful city of Poreč and its surrounding area.
