People’s Square is the center of public life in Zadar ever since the Renaissance. It is dominated by the Town Hall, that was built on the site of an old town hall dating from 1934. when Italians ruled the city. There is also a small pre-Romanesque church of St. Lawrence. Just outside the square premises on the eastern side, there is a Ghirardini palace built in Romanesque style with a Renaissance balcony from 15th century. A large street light pole on the square is a replica of the one from 1894., and is was put there to celebrate 100 years since the first electric light bulb was used in the street lighting. Square certainly owes part of its popularity to the cafes whose tradition goes back to 1730, when Joseph Carceninga (first manufacturer of the popular Maraschino drink) opened the first coffee house.
