Fortress Fortica
Fortress Fortica (Španjola)
The Fortica fortress was built in the mid 16th century and is located above the old town. The fort offers a breathtaking view of the city of Hvar and the surrounding islands. Once the fort was part of the defense fortifications in order to protect the port and the town of Hvar, and today it is a symbol of the rich history that took place in this region and is one of the best preserved fortresses on the Adriatic. This is evidenced by numerous historical evidence, such as the coat of arms of the city of Hvar, on which the fortress is shown. The fort is named after the Italian word meaning ‘fortress’. The people of Hvar also call it ‘Španjola’. Its architecture has elements of antiquity and the Middle Ages. It has been converted into a restaurant since the 70s of the last century.
