Fortress St. John
The Fortress of St. John
St. John’s Fortress is located on a hill on the northern side of the historic city core. It is named after the chapel of St. John, which was once settled there. Located on a 115m high hill, this is a large fortress with a star-shaped floor plan. It is also known as Tanaja because one side of the fortress is reinforced with a masonry embankment, which is called tanaglia in Italian. It was erected in 1646 according to a project by the Venetian military engineer Antonio Leni. It was built on the model of military architecture with layers of soil, which are used for prevention of wall breaking in case of shelling. The Šubićevac Fortress was built that same year. The two fortresses are connected with a wooden palisade in the defence system.
