The Franciscan Monastery
Franciscan Monastery of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in the 15th century next to a late Gothic style Church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, which was initially smaller, but was later expanded and given the elements of the baroque style. The monastery included a pharmacy, a hospital and public schools. At first, in the 18th and 19th centuries, a public elementary school was located there and later a high school was founded in 1836, with classes held in German. The monk Felicissimus Christel was the first known teacher, and apart from him the monk Juraj Brunne, a botanist and mathematician, was also famous. Its library is very rich and it contains incunabula, early releases and 22 manuscripts. The greatest feast of the Pazin Franciscans is the Portiuncula “Rome”, and the church has given to the Franciscans the right of forgiveness of sins to those who visit the church of Our Lady of the Angels in Assisi on August 2.
