Grgur Ninski Statue
The statue of Grgur Ninski
The Bishop Grgur Ninski was a very important figure in the history of Croatian language. He had his seat in Nin from 900-929. He was the main advocate of the Old Slavonic language, the national Glagolitic script, and the church service in Glagolitic. Grgur Ninski was the leading church power in the State, which made him the symbol of national pride. The bronze statue of the Bishop Grgur Ninski – the work of the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović – can be found in Nin next to the Church of St Ansel. There is a belief connected with the bronze statue of Grgur Ninski, which says that touching its big toe will fulfill one’s wishes.
