The municipality of Kanfanar has been inhabited since prehistoric times, but was first mentioned in 1096. Due to the plague that back then devastated certain parts of Istria, people from nearby towns began to settle in Kanfanar, and with them the capitol of the church of Dvigrad. In order to keep the tradition, today a folk festival takes place on St. Jacob’s day. The festival of Istrian ox – boškarin is held every year at the local fairground of Jakovlje. The boškarin ox is considered one of the biggest mammals in Europe. Other than the boškarin’s beauty (they are classified among the most beautiful animals in the world), these animals have always had an important role in the lives of local residents. Although the soil on which they were settled was rather infertile, they didn’t choose what they’d eat and hence ensured the survival of farmers, but also contributed to the beautiful pastures and forests.
