Land Gates were built in 1543 in a port of Foša, as the main entrance gate to the city and today it makes a true Renaissance masterpiece. This is one of the most beautiful monuments from the time of Venetian rule in Dalmatia, and its famous characteristic is one big triumphal arch for vehicles passage with two smaller side passages for pedestrians. The gates are decorated with different scenes, such as Zadar city crest showing St. Grisogono on a horseback and the Venetian Republic crest, showing St. Mark’s lion. There used to be a wooden bridge leading next to the Forte fortress till this gate if coming from the mainland or through the Porta Erizzo, to enter the city. Unfortunately, the original wooden door is not preserved but there are still hinges and post from the 16th century. Central gates are still standing as part of a Renaissance wall.
