- Lazareti Quarantine
During the outbreak of the plague and other incurable diseases, in 1377 the government issued a decree according anyone who lived abroad to stay away from the city. The decree was published in the Green Book. The Lazareti is composed of five buildings three hundred meters away from the Walls of Dubrovnik to the east. Before entering the city, newcomers had to spend 30 days (a trentine) in a restricted place (originally nearby islands Mrkan, Bobara i Supetar just off the coast in Cavtat) waiting to see whether the symptoms of the Black Death would develop. Ships were also isolated before entering the city of Dubrovnik. The quarantine was later moved to Dubrovnik, to Dance. After Dubrovnik, the quarantine was moved to Lokrum and Ploče and the isolation was prolonged to 40 days. It also functioned as a sea ambulance and sanitary cordon towards the mainland.
