Main City Gate
Main City Gate
The Main City Gate was built in the 14th century. The Gate is characteristic because it contains elements of both Gothic and Romanesque styles. The primary role of these gates was to defend the city, and they also presented the only option of access to the town’s center. The main gate connects the lower and the upper square. They consisted of two wooden doors and loopholes hidden in various places which protected access to the center. Above the entrance to the passage, there are three coats of arms: the coat of arms of Motovun, the Venetian lion and the coat of arms belonging to the Memo family. At the very entrance to the town, a stone lion is set, symbolizing the rule of Venice. Interestingly enough, Motovun is the only town containing 13 lions, some of which hold an open, and some a closed book. It is believed that the lions with open books represent a period of peace, while the other ones with closed books represent the periods of war.
