- Marco Polo house
Marco Polo house
In the central part of the old town, near the church of St. Mark, there is a house belonging to the Polo family. It is believed that in it the trader, world traveler and travel writer Marco Polo was born. He was captured in 1298 in a naval battle that took place between Genoa and Venice. He was imprisoned in Genoa’s dungeon. In prison, he recounted the experiences from a trip to Asia to his cellmate Rustichelli, which he wrote down. From these records came the book Il Milione, which is the most-widely read and translated book in the world after the Bible and the Koran.
