- Mother of Mercy
Church and bell tower of the Mother of Mercy
The church of St. Mother of Mercy is located on the Liberty Square. The church was built on that site for a very strange reason. In ancient writings it was written that in 1497 Virgin Mary appeared to Pavle Račica in his dream. Reportedly, she told him to take her statue to the church’s site. In the morning he came to the church and tried to move the statue together with the residents. Then, he realized they should build a shrine dedicated to Virgin Mary at the exact same place. Apart from this incredible story, you will also be impressed by the church’s appearance. The year of 1587 is carved on the outside of the church as a reminder of the completion of its construction. Although the church may appear very simple, it loyally keeps valuable and rich artwork.
