Croatian National Theater
The building of the Croatian National Theater was built in 1893 when the Split Theater was established. In the beginning, the performances were held by traveling theaters and opera troupes from Czech Republic, Italy, Belgrade, Zagreb etc. Between the two world wars the Ljubljana and Zagreb Operas toured here. The first ensemble was founded in 1922. It consisted of amateurs and a few professional actors . The first intendant was Ivo Tijardović who used his operettas Mala Floramye and Splitski to make the theater recognizable. Several great actors emerged from this theater to the Yugoslavian and Croatian theater and movie scene. There you can find busts of the great men of Split who played a major role in the Croatian theatrical and cultural scene: Marko Marulić, Ivo Tijardović, Gajo Bulat, Josip Genda, Boris Dvornik and others.
