Croatian National Theater
The building of the Varaždin National Theater was built in 1873 according to the design of the Viennese architect Herman Helemer. The theater tradition in Varaždin dates back to the mid-17th century, while from the 1770s, plays were hosted at the Jesuit theater in the Varaždin grammar school. The first public theater in Varaždin was opened in 1788. The first Croatian professional ensemble was founded in 1898, while the theater was run by the Croatian Drama Society until 1915. Until the Second World War, the theater in Osijek kept the theater seasons alive. From 1942, the Association of Croatian Theater Volunteers was active, while form 1945 the theater continuously functions as the Croatian National Theater.
