The hill Nehaj got its name from Uskoci who wanted to build the Nehaj fortress on it for defence purposes. Uskoci choose the name of Nehaj (Croatian for ‘don’t worry’) because they wanted the citizens of Senj, and all those who lived near the town of Senj, not to worry that someone will take over the hill or the fortress as long as they are defending it. Their “prophecy” came true – for as long as Uskoci defended the fortress of Nehaj, nobody else managed to take it over, and that is why the people of Senj were safe at all times.
