Old town – Tvrđa
Stari grad (Tvrđa)
Old Town Tvrđa was built in the 18th century with the city walls and gates, the main market in square shape and Romanesque core. It was built by the Austrian government after the defeat of the Turks and their abandonment of these areas. It was the military, economic, cultural and administrative center of the city of Osijek, but also of the whole Slavonia. Buildings in its architecture has elements of baroque and they are one of the best preserved Baroque buildings in Croatia. Particularly noteworthy is the building of the Main Guard, which is now converted into a Museum of Slavonia, baroque St. Votive statue of the Holy Trinity, civil and noble buildings, fountain, old grammar school and the church of St. Michael with numerous historical specimens, such as the Baroque altars, towers, statues of saints and similar.
