The oldest parts of the fortress date back to the 14th century. It was located on the land separate from Varaždin, which had the status of a free royal city. Because of the danger of Turkish conquest, it was turned into a Renaissance fortress and surrounded by high earthen walls with bastions and a double ravine filled with water. The owners of this castle were the famous noble families of the time: Ivan Ungnad, the Counts of Celje, Juraj Brandenburg, Viceroy Tomo Erdödy and his successors. Since 1925, the fortress has been the property of the city of Varaždin. That same year, the Varaždin City Museum was opened in the Old Town. In contains several valuable collections such as the collections of guild items, weapons, paintings, furniture, historic portraits, porcelain, clocks and glass. There is also a variety of objects from everyday life of Varaždin nobility and the wealthy bourgeoisie.
