Opposite the Church of Holy Salvation, next to the Pile Gates, is the magnificent fountain built by Onofrio della Cava of Naples. The fountain symbolizes the construction of the city waterworks in 1438 which supplied the town with fresh water for 500 years. The original fountain was decorated more richly, but was damaged when the stone cupola collapsed in the earthquake of 1667. Today it is the meeting place of young men and women, and the place where tourists and citizens can get invigorated with fresh water.
