One of the most famous symbols of the island is Pag’s lace, which Croatia declared as cultural heritage. The lace is done manually by women who learned the procedure of making lace from their mothers and grandmothers. Lacemaking is a very old profession in the whole Dalmatia. Records from as early as the 15th century speak of making lace. Namely, lacemaking was taught in the monastery of St. Margaret. Ruler of Habsburg, Empress Maria Theresa was thrilled by the beauty of Pag’s lace, so years later the first lace school was opened. In order to preserve the tradition of lacemaking, they teach new generations, which will later transmit their knowledge to their descendants. On the town’s main square the Gallery of Pag’s Lace is opened, where numerous examples of lace are shown.
