- Račić Mausoleum
The Račić Family Mausoleum
The Mausoleum belonging the ship-owner family Račić was built by the famous sculptor Ivan Meštrović in 1921. It was built in the cemetery of St. Roch, i.e. in the stead of St. Roch chapel from the 15th cenutry. The material used for building is the white stone from the island of Brač, and there is no other material other bronze that adorns the bell and the front door of the mausoleum. The building is symbolic and represents the basic stages of human life, i.e. the birth, life and death. At the entrance, there are two caryatids, a vault with angels’ heads, whose head is symbolized by evangelists, side aisles and the main altar. On the bell, a thought by Meštrović is inscribed, which reads: “Discover the secret of love and you will solve the secret of death and believe that life is eternal”.
