Karlovac lies on four rivers Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra. The longest among them is the Kupa River, which rises in Gorski Kotar from the turquoise-green pond on the mountain Risnjak, which is also a national park. It is interesting that it rises relatively close to the Adriatic Sea (30 m), but it flows in the opposite direction and its estuary is into the Sava River, near the town of Sisak. It is a natural phenomenon which does not appear anywhere in the world. A number of sports – recreational activities take place on the river, such as rafting, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming. On the river are also two hydropower plants, one of which was built at the beginning of the last century.
