Believe it or not, you can see Egyptian sphinxes in Split. After military successes in Egypt, amazed by the Egyptian culture, Emperor Diocletian brought twelve sphinxes made of black granite to Split in 297 and 298. In ancient times they were the symbol of the divine reign of Emperor Diocletian. Today, only five are preserved. One of them is located at the entrance to the temple. The Sphinx in the Peristyle is the largest – when the emperor was alive, it was 1800 years old, and today it is estimated to be about 3500 years old.
