Sponza Palace (Dubrovnik)
The Sponza Palace was built in the 16th century as a mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles. It is situated near the Bell Tower. This complex palace was designed by chief architect Paskoje Miličević as a large rectangular building with an inner courtyard, so that the open porch communicates with the square in front; another porch opens on the first floor in front. On the arch of the atrium leading to the warehouse is an inscription reading: “Our weights do not permit cheating or being cheated. When I measure the commodities the Lord measures with me.” Members of the Academy would often gather inside the premises of Sponza Palace to discuss literature. Nowadays the Sponza Palace is the home of the archive, which is one of the richest archives in Europe. This palace is also the home of a memorial room where the portraits of deceased soldiers from Dubrovnik are exhibited.
