Cathedral of St. Anastasia

Cathedral of St. Anastasia is a three nave Romanesque building, and also the largest church in Dalmatia. It was built through 12th century and again in 13th century after being destroyed in 1202 by the Venetians. This was the site of an early Christian basilica dating from 4th or 5th century. The altar in the northern apse still keeps a sarcophagus with relics of St. Anastasia, ordered by Bishop Donatus. Cathedral’s facade shows perfect harmony of horizontal and vertical lines on late-Romanesque style portals, that also have some Gothic style in the lunettes with reliefs. Visit to his church by two Popes, Alexander III. and John Paul II. prove St. Anastasia’s importance. Apart from other things, the church is also decorated with a stone seat for an archbishop and a 6th century six-leaves baptistery. The sacristy used to be called the chapel of St. Barbara, and it now belongs to oldest parts of the cathedral. The bell tower was built in 15th and 19th centuries in a neo-Romanesque style, and it offers a perfect view of the city and its surroundings.
