St. Barbara Church
The Church of St. Barbara
According to the inscriptions, fragments of the early Christian crosses, plaits intertwining around animal figures, columns, parts of the ancient capitals and the remains of frescoes, this pre-Romanesque basilica from the 9th or 10th century was probably built on the foundations of a church from the 6th century, which was dedicated to St. Martin. The Church of St. Barbara was built of cut stone. The inscription found under the ornate lintel says that the church was built by prior Mayo and his cousin Peter around the year 1000. It was originally dedicated to St. Martin, and later to St. Barbara after the demolition of the same-named church on the mainland.
