St. Francis’ Church, Monastery and Museum

Built in the 14th century, the church of St. Francis is the first Croatian shrine of Saint Francis Tavelić. The church represents spacious single vessel, Gothic style architecture without architectural decorative elements. At the front of the church is the main entrance with a Gothic style stone frame. Remains of frescos from the 14th century are visible in the lunette. In the 15th century, the Holy Cross Chapel was added and the presbytery with its shrine was rearranged. Located in the Holy Cross Chapel is an organ that was built in 1762 by Petar Nakić. On the south side of the church is a monastery which dates back to the 14th century. Unlike conventional Franciscan monasteries, this one has an irregular and elongated courtyard, which indicates that it was built in several stages. The monastery keeps the monumental city heritage. It contains a collection of paintings, relics and religious objects. The monastery library is accentuated with a collection of 140 incunabula as well as a collection of handwritten codices. Here, you can also find the “Šibenik Prayer”, a baroque altar, a Gothic cross and the like.
