- St. Mark’s Cathedral
St. Mark’s Cathedral
It was built in the 15th century on the site of a Romanesque church from the 13th century. St. Mark’s Cathedral is a three-nave basilica of Romanesque style. The south aisle is dedicated to St. James, the north one to St. John, and next to it the votive chapel of St. Roch was added. The exterior and interior decoration represent a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles. It was built by Italian masters, but mostly by local builders throughout the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. The most famous among them was Marko Andrijić. As one of the first builders of cathedrals, the master Bonino da Milano, made the built the church portal around 1412 and the figure of St. James at the southern gates. The altars are adorned with many paintings, starting from Jacopo Tintoretto and other Italian painters. Among the local sculptors, the works of Fran Čučić, Ivan Kerdić, Ivan Meštrović, Alojzije Lozica, Fran Kršinića and Izvor Oreb should be noted.
