The Church St. Mary of the Sea

Vrsar contains a Romanesque basilica of St. Mary of the Sea. The original church of St. Mary was built there in the second half of the 8th century. Between the 8th and 12th century, it underwent a number of changes, while later several restorations took place, the last of which happened in 1969. Reminiscent of the early Christian church. In the eastern part of the church there is a bell tower in the form of a Romanesque monofora. The bell tower contains a small bell from 1922. Interior walls are decorated with frescoes, the first of which were painted in the 9th or 10th century, while the later ones date back to the 16th century. Unfortunately, the traces of frescoes are minimal today. The Basilica once contained a rich inventory, while today it seems empty and poor. In the church yard, there is a Roman stone block decorated with garlands. Next to the basilica, one can see the remains of the old monastery. The Franciscans gave the old monastery a baroque appearance, and after they left, a school for priests was located there.
